Shulamit Bismuth (b. 1993, Paris) is a French-Israeli visual artist living and working in Jerusalem.
Raised in Nouméa, New Caledonia, Bismuth began her artistic training in New York before continuing her studies in Montreal and later graduating from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem in 2021.
Working primarily with white watercolor on black paper in monumental formats, Bismuth has developed a distinctive visual language in which light appears to emerge from within the surface itself. Through subtle modulations of density, transparency, and luminosity, her paintings transform watercolor into a space of perception, where forms oscillate between manifestation and dissolution.
At the core of her practice is an inquiry into the nature of presence. Using light as a material language, she explores what becomes visible when latent forms of presence, memory, and relation are brought into view. Her work investigates the thresholds between appearance and disappearance, individuality and collectivity, the visible and the unseen.
Informed by experiences of displacement, transformation, and existential questioning, Bismuth’s practice engages questions that are deeply personal yet fundamentally universal. Rather than constructing narratives, she creates contemplative fields of encounter in which viewers are invited to experience light as a carrier of potential, revealing the hidden structures through which human beings connect, belong, and transform.
Through large-scale paintings that are experienced as much as they are observed, Bismuth expands the boundaries of painting into spaces of reflection, perception, and shared presence.
